This area was inhabited by the first "Ecuadorian" culture, with archeological evidence dating back 8,000 years. The predominant culture was the Manteña (500 BC to 1500 BC). If you have the time, on the road from Guayaquil, you should visit the Fundacion Pro Pueblo archeological museum, near the town of La Libertad.

This part of Manabi Province is a very unique dry area called the xeric scrub ecological zone (the same ecological zone as the Galapagos islands), more commonly referred to as "dry forest," that stretches from the central coast of Ecuador south to the northern coast of Peru. From December to July, the area is sunny and dry and from July to November it is usually misty and chilly (as cold as 15ºC); however, this is the perfect time to see the incredible yearly migration of the humpbacked whales!
